Implementing sustainable practices into your business just became a whole lot easier with the launch of a new tool kit developed by The Sustainability Company.

The Sustainability Company and new tool kit Sustainable Practice 360° - a set of tools for implementing and managing change to reflect a 360° perspective was launched last week.

The Sustainability Company is a partnership between Dr Barry Law and The Shannon Company (in New Zealand and Australia)

The Sustainable Practice 360° tool kit is the culmination of two years of practical research and development aimed at coming up with a way to manage the necessity of change, sparked by the Global Financial Crisis and the need for action on climate change.

Dr Law spent twenty two years working as an academic at the University of Canterburydeveloping ideas, facilitating change and managing a national advisory team in education for sustainability. Before joining  The Shannon Company, he decided to opt out of academia and seek to take his ideas and road test them in the heat of the “commercial kitchen”.

Sustainable Practice 360 is a holistic approach, it’s not about just looking at the economic benefits, it requires a systems thinking approach he said.

“We live on this planet, it’s the only planet we’ve got, and we’ve got a whole lot of resources we need to look after. For me an environment first approach is critical.”

Sustainable practice 360 was road tested with three beta clients Otago PolytechnicUntouched World and The Millennium Hotel Christchurch and 12 small businesses in Queenstown and Wanaka.

The Shannon Company (NZ) Managing Director Chris Pickrill said ‘thinking people’ understand the ‘why’ part of the need to change; but with this venture they are attempting to address the ‘how’.

The Shannon Company specialises in developing behaviour change communications on behalf of its clients to enable them to drive action through changing the behaviour of a particular target audience. The action ranges from saving water, curtailing drug and alcohol abuse, being prepared for bushfires, saving for retirement, respecting diversity and workplace safety.

Mr Pickrill said that with a unique communication development focus on behaviour change, it was not surprising that the company “got” what Barry was trying to achieve and committed the connections, creative talent and dollars to help make the dreams a reality.
