Sustainability as a word is often misunderstood and misused.
Sustainability defined: as development that ‘meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs’ (World Commission; Education and Development, 1987).
This implies a need for equity between generations and within generations.
Sustainability viewed as a system thinking approach: moves beyond competing views that promote either; sustainable economic growth, sustainable human development or ecological sustainability in isolation, and focuses on an integrated systems thinking approach to enable a sustainable future for all.
This implies an environment first approach to ensure sustainable human development and sustainable economic activity are in harmony.
The fact we only have one planet means that an environment first approach is required to ensure sustainable human development and sustainable economic activity. At The Sustainability Company we encourage business to move beyond competing views that promote sustainable economic growth, sustainable human development or ecological sustainability, in isolation. We focus on integrating all views in a behaviour change approach to ensure we don’t compromise the needs of future generations.
